HIP HOP ARTIST WYCLEF JEAN SHOT IN HAND IN HAITI

Grammy nominated recording Artist Wyclef Jean

Hip-hop artist Wyclef Jean was shot in the hand Saturday night on the eve of Haiti's presidential runoff election.

A spokesman for the singer said it was a minor graze to the hand of the Haitian-born star who has been campaigning for presidential contender Michel “Sweet Micky” Martelly in a race that has been tainted by fraud, violence and a number of irregularities.

Details of the shooting were not immediately clear.

Jean himself tried to run for president last year but was barred by Haiti's electoral commission, which said he was ineligible because he has been living in the United States.

Since then, he has thrown his clout behind Martelly, 50, a musician-turned-politician, who is facing former first lady and university professor Mirlande Manigat, 70.

Sunday's runoff vote is seen by many as a major step forward in rebuilding Haiti, following the January 2010 earthquake that killed 200,000 and has left a million Haitians living in tent camps.

Haiti’s first round of voting in November was problem plagued from the start. Haitians arrived at polls to find names missing from voter rolls and some ballot boxes dumped. Haitians rioted.
